10/13/03 crab NWS:: The crew of the catcher processor Blue Dutch, based out of Seattle,Wash., learns how to operate a CGP1 dewatering pump from rescue swimmer Josh Mitcheltree from Air Station USCG Kodiak. During the crab fishing seasons Air Station Kodiak is based out of Cold Bay, AK and is on 30 a minute alert to respond to search and rescue missions. In an emergency the pump would be hoisted down by the Coast Guard helicopter to a boat taking on water or having flooding problems. Prior to the Bering Sea crab fishing seasons, the coast guard holds daily survival lessons in Dutch Harbor, AK teaching crews how to respond to emergencies at sea.
