Nikkia Owlchild of the Wanupum Indians explains the significance of the buried petroglyphs to students Central Washington University Museum of Culture and Environment during an exhibit called "Sacred Spaces" in Ellensburg, Wash. on February 3, 2011. When the Priest Rapids Dam was built in 1961 it flooded Whale Island which the Wanapum consider a holy place, burying the ancient petroglyphs.
