10/23/03 crab NWS::  Processor Romel Gante, originally from the Phillipines but now living in Hawaii, butchers a red king crab at the Unisea plant in Dutch Harbor, AK.  Working 12 hours a day during red king crab season Gante says he sends his money home to his family in the Phillipines but dreams of buying a house in Hawaii and the Phillipines someday.  Caught in Unisea employs about 1200 processors for a 5 month contract (on average) during its peak months in January and February.  The processors representing around 12 different countries, are supplied with airfare from Seattle, food, laundry service, meals, housing, and medical care from Unisea so they're cost of living is minimal and many are able to save their money.
