Deckhands raise a crab pot out of the frigid waters on board the F/V Kiska Sea during the oplio (snow) crab season within the arctic ice floes of the Bering Sea in the winter of 1995. A hydrolic crane is used to raise the pot. The fishing boat had sought cover from the icy waves during a storm. The Bering Sea is known for having some of the most violent weather in the world. Crab fishing in the 1990's was one of the most dangerous jobs in America. The risks were high for fatalities and injuries but the money was good and lured young men to participate in the fishery.
